Continental to Charge for First Checked Bag (Update: and Other Bad News)
Continental, an airline which generally tries to portray itself in taking the high round vis-a-vi passenger treatment, has announced that it will start charging passengers for their first checked bag. This leaves AirTran, Alaska, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest as the major carriers which still offer one checked bag fee-free.
Edit: Although elites are exempt from the new fees, Continental also has made changes that will piss off its most frequent fliers, starting next year, including the elimination of 500-mile minimums on short flights (likely to align with United and USAir prior to joining Star Alliance) and a reduction in elite bonus miles (to align with United, USAir has completely eliminted elite bonus miles).
