Kornheiser on Hispanics

without comments

After hearing this comment from Tony Kornheiser on Monday Night Football yesterday evening, I am surprised that he is not swimming in hot water today.  ESPN replayed video of Dallas’s Felix Jones running a kickoff back for a touchdown, but with audio from ESPN’s Spanish-language affiliate.  After hearing the enthusiastic call of the play by the Spanish language announcers, Kornheiser remarked, “I took high school Spanish.  Either he said, ‘He’s not going to be caught,’ or ‘Please pick up my dry cleaning tomorrow.’”

I thought this was a moderately offensive thing to say, but I guess I tend more towards political correctness (at least in public) than some.  Kornheiser did apologize for his comment later in the broadcast when another reference was made to ESPN’s Spanish-language broadcasts of football, so maybe that has quieted the crowd of critics.  Or maybe we’re not hearing anything about Kornheiser’s remark because ESPN has a near-monopoly on sports news and they’re not about to throw their own guy under the bus.

Even better than a gold medal

without comments

This typo on ESPN.com was so funny that I had to make note of it.  Here’s a screen grab of the site; look just below the lead photo of Michael Phelps and see if you catch it.  Click for enlarged version.

Yes, that’s right: it says “Soni wins 200 breasts.”  That’s an unfortunate extra “s”!

Drooling in the pool

This article by ESPN’s Mary Buckheit about why she’s rooting for Ryan Lochte over Michael Phelps in tonight’s 200 IM final really cracked me up.  She pretty clearly has a big time crush on Mr. Lochte.

It’s just that there’s something I loved Ryan Lochte. …

Relaxed in a folding chair, from beneath a drape of wet curls, he talked softly and unhurriedly. He told us about himself, “a clown who surfs Daytona Beach.” He fielded questions about his imaginative drawings and skateboard injuries.

I told him I liked his brown Wallabees that he somehow pulls off with red mesh Speedo shorts and a T-shirt. “Yeah, old-school Clarks, they’re sweet, right?” he concurred.

Way to maintain high journalistic standards.

Anyway, I’m rooting for Phelps in the final which will be in only about 20 minutes.  Should be exciting.
